ABOUT THIS BLOG

With a long family history that goes back many generations in this area it pains me to see the impact that government neglect is having on our area. The two major parties are simply not up to the job anymore. I can no longer sit back and watch this happen and have decided to run for the state seat of Cairns.

It is time we had a voice in parliament again, not puppets of faceless party machines from Canberra. By posting media releases on this blog the people of Cairns can determine if we have policies and concepts that they agree with.

I ask you to join me in ensuring that Cairns and Far North Queensland gets a fair go.

AUSTRALIA PARTY PROPOSES RAIL TRANSPORT FOR CAIRNS

Had a great day today with my colleagues the candidates for Mulgrave and Barron River today focusing on issues that impact on the people of Cairns and FNQ. Today we announced that we were prepared to put rail transport on the agenda for Cairns. This is well over due and we're sick of the excuses.

The benefits for the community is enormous. Look at what Cairns rate payers are having to pay to build car parking. Part of this problem is due to the state government changing the planning laws to suit themselves and not provide parking spaces with their new premises that any other developer would have to

Here is the official media release.

The Far North Queensland Australian Party candidates have announced that the first stage of their transport policy will bring rail transport to Far North Queensland.

Candidate for Mulgrave Damien Byrnes who has been a long term advocate for rail transport said he was very excited about the prospect.
“With the continuing growth to the south of Cairns it is vital that we look at the rail options available in order to take cars off the road and ease congestion on our roads. Anyone who has travelled along the Bruce Highway on to Ray Jones Drive knows why we need this.” Mr Byrnes said.

Candidate for Cairns D.J.Hunt stated the benefits for the community were enormous.
“This proposal has the ability to take 200 or more cars off the road everyday. That’s 200 more car parking spaces we have in town. That’s less money rate payers have to fork out for council to build parking facilities. That’s more customers for struggling businesses not lost because they couldn’t get a park.”

Candidate for Barron River, Brendan Fitzgerald stated the relatively low cost would provide huge returns.
“When the ALP and LNP are talking about $8billion for a rail tunnel in Brisbane, this is a drop in the ocean. We have the infrastructure just sitting there doing nothing. Families would save enormous amounts of money by being able to catch a train instead of using their vehicles and paying for parking in town.”

The proposed concept combines with current infrastructure already in place with some concessions and equipment required in order to reduce initial costs in order to show there is a demand for services without committing excessive amounts of money. The idea is to establish stops between Cairns and Gordonvale and to use facilities in place at Redlynch. There would be morning and afternoon services on a trial basis to determine viability with a view to extending the services further if viable and would work in conjunction with the current bus services.

Mr Hunt said “We’ve had enough of the excuses. The people of Far North Queensland want this. The people of FNQ need this and the people of FNQ deserve this. Instead of double talk and pats on the back we get from our current sitting members on rail transport, we will make this happen.”

$15million man pays farmers 0.45c,yeah that's fair

What a disgrace. The head of Coles after his company has an increase of 21% in profits during the much hyped GFC, he actually gets paid over $15million. Now I don't begrudge anyone earning a quid, but this bloke is responsible for his company offering FNQ farmers $0.45/litre for their milk. That price is not sustainable.
His company is currently selling the milk they get from their southern suppliers in the no name brands for $1/Litre. This is designed to cripple the industry and reduce the demand for the branded milk which uses FNQ produced milk. If there is no demand for it, which is what happens if everyone keeps buying no-name milk, they will be forced into taking the unsustainable $0.45/litre or walk off their farms.
So going back to the original point his company had an INCREASE of 21% in PROFITS, during the GFC and on top of the fact that they pay this bloke $15million.

Dick Smith is calling for this bloke to give back to the community. Stuff that, just pay the farmers a decent price Coles/Woolies.

ALP DESPERATE FOR POLICY BUT WE'RE HAPPY TO HELP

Seems the Premier is out of ideas and need to steal policy from Katters Australian Party. At the press conference announcing FNQ candidates in Cairns on 18th September 2011 it was well reported that Bob Katter laid out our plan to address insurance issues and to name and shame insurers not doing the right thing by victims of the natural disasters. Today we see the Premier has announced just what Bob said. See link below.

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8352377/name-and-shame-bad-insurers-bligh

At the end of the day we don't care who brings it in, as long as it happens. If the premier needs some help with other policy ideas for health, law and order etc they can feel free to give the office a call.

FUEL RIPOFFS ON THE WAY

Here we go again. The fuel companies and the supermarket stooge owners are getting ready to rip us off again because of their market dominance and a toothless tiger regulation and watch dog. What happened to the great saviour "fuelwatch" that went well, anyway I digress.
These great community minded citizens have warned there is going to be a rise in fuel prices based on, wait for it, the decrease of the Aussie dollar. Are you #*%@ing kidding me. Weeks ago our Aussie dollar went up to about $1.10US. Where was the decrease in bowser prices? If the justification of increasing prices is a drop in $AUS shouldn't fuel prices drop if there is an increase in the $AUS? Lets hear their slippery, carpet bagger spin doctors answer that question.

These companies continue to give it to Australians and we just keep taking it. The major supermarkets and fuel companies choked out their competition so they could do crap like this and we have no competitior to go to get a fair go. This is what supermarkets are doing with milk.

If we want fuel to come down we need to point out these lies from the fuel companies. Explain why if you raise price for decrease $AUS you don't bring prices down when it rises. It is time we made ethanol a viable industry in our state.

More police assaulted

Another weekend another incident of police being set upon and spat at. This is a disgrace and the result of a soft justice police. Here is the media release put out by me-

Australia Party calls for tougher penalties for serious assaults
The Australian Party Candidate for Cairns Darren Hunt has called for tougher penalties for assaults on emergency services staff.
Mr Hunt said “Once again we have had an attack on Cairns police officers whilst doing their job keeping Queensland safe. We have had a gang of people turn on police because there is no deterrent under our laws anymore. Our thoughts are with the victims and we hope they suffer no long term effects.”
“In a worrying trend, an offender has again spat at the officers meaning they will have a nervous time, with their lives disrupted, waiting to see if they have  contracted a disease from this disgusting assault.”
“We renew our calls that the charge of serious assault under the Criminal Code needs to be amended to include all emergency services staff. There then needs to be amendment that includes a penalty of mandatory imprisonment for serious assault. Minor and technical assaults can be dealt with under legislation such as the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act without mandatory imprisonment, but serious assault charges need to send a message that assaults on people that protect Queensland are not tolerated.”
“The LNP has back flipped on their position and the ALP is soft on crime. The Australian Party is the only party with the courage to bring about legislative reform to provide a viable law and order policy. If you can’t live by the rules of our society, you will be removed from it.”

Captain Bligh torpedoes Cairns AGAIN!!!!

Once again the Bligh government has shown how they don't give a stuff about anyone outside the South East corner of Queensland. Here is the media release from me-

The Australian Party Candidate for Cairns Darren Hunt has called for the Premier to explain why her government continues to overlook Cairns.
Mr Hunt said “The Premiers announcement that she wants the navy submarines to be based in Brisbane, when Cairns is the only naval base on the east coast, shows she is desperate to pork barrel Brisbane electorates at the expense of Cairns. It is further proof that under this government Regional and Rural Queensland will never get a fair go.”
“The people of Cairns still remember it was her government that cruelled NQEA when they had the potential to create jobs and growth for Cairns. This government provided a subsidy to Brisbane airport instead of Cairns to attract direct flights from China when we had the highest unemployment rates and a downturn in tourism.”
“At a time when Cairns has some of the highest unemployment rates in the country, opportunities for jobs in Cairns should be this governments priority. Unfortunately, as usual with this government, we are out of sight out of mind and the Premier chose to pork barrel Brisbane electorates and then maybe throw Cairns the scraps that fall off the table.”
“The Australian Party will work to help diversify the Cairns economy and attract employment opportunities instead of concentrating only on Brisbane.”

NOT ALL LEAGUE PLAYERS ARE BOOFHEADS AND THUGS

Last night I loved going to the Men of League(MOL) charity dinner. The MOL was set up to look after and support footballers and their families who have illness, injuries or fall on hard times. A great idea to look after those that never got to make the $millions playing a game they love.
The dinner was organised as a fundraiser for MOL and was attended by the PM's 13 on their way to play against PNG on Sunday. The payers were assigned tables with guests and mingled and chatted with guests and all were very approachable.
Guest speakers included Mal Meninga, Mick Crocker, Mitchell Pearce.
Most importantly was captain Nathan Hindmarsh who spoke on the theme and motivation for the tour. On their jerseys and the motto for their trip is'Violence against women is not acceptable'. Nathan spoke of the need to change thinking that violence against women is acceptable in any form, that victims do not bring it on themselves and such thinking needs to change. The figures quoted were shocking and Nathan was very committed to raising awareness on the issue and just goes to show such programs and commitment can hopefully bring change.
Along the same line it was announced that Northern Pride player and Take Pride program co-ordinator Chey Bird may be heading overseas to further his career. I wish him all the best and hope this works out for him. The work he has done off the field promoting and fostering our game throughout Far North Qld, not just Cairns, has been amazing. The media are quick to focus on the bad things, but we need to show that league players do a lot of community work and positive things for our community.
Cairns will surely be worse off when a role model like Chey Bird moves on

CHILD PORN IS NOT A VICTIMLESS CRIME

The District Court is finally starting to reflect the punishments that society demands for child sex offences. The story in the Courier Mail shows that Judges are trying to send out the message that child porn is not a victimless crime and they should be commended for that.
Read the story at this link-
http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/jail-only-option-for-man-guilty-of-possessing-child-porn-judge-rules/story-e6freoof-1226138823626

The story mentions the sentence handed down and without knowing the facts presented and possible appeals I will not comment I will let others make up their mind if they think it is adequate.

The issue to be discussed is this thinking that viewing shild porn is somehow not as bad as committing the crime or that there is no victim. Having worked in a role dealing with child sex offenders and those viewing child porn I have heard first hand how they try and justify or mitigate their actions as 'not that bad'. They are just as bad as the person committing the offence. If we send a mixed message about what is acceptable in society, we set people up to fail.

I say that people in possession of child porn are helping facilitate child sex offences. if there was no market, people wouldn't be selling the images. To make it clear that possessing child porn is just as bad as committing the offence, they should be charged as a 'party to the offence' depicted in the photo/image and penalties reflect same.

AMBO's REMEMBRANCE DAY

Great to see a good turn out on The Esplanade for the remembrance ceremony for ambulance staff. With 32 staff having lost their lives in the line of duty shows just how dangerous the role is that these men and women perform. We regularly hear about the bravery of firefighters and coppers but not so much about ambulance staff.
The crap these staff have to put up with these days would make most people shudder, yet day after day they keep showing up to keep us safe.
My thoughts go out to all the brave ambulance staff and their friends and families. I appreciate what you do and hope you all stay safe.

MENTAL HEALTH FARCE

Yesterday I posted about the stupid decision regarding mental health cuts and the need to re-instate the previous arrangements so people particularly in rural and regional Australia had more options. I sent out a media press release regarding the issue which you can read below.

It was disappointing that this did not get picked up by the Cairns Post given the major story in the Courier Mail about Cairns on mental health issues. The story provided figures showing Cairns patients have had to wait 150hours to get a bed. 86% of patients have to wait greater than 8hours. That's only the ones who hang around, how many walk out before they see someone to get the help they need?
While these people are waiting in cues or taking up beds it puts a further strain on the already struggling Emergency Department. Anything that takes pressure of our public health system and Emergency Department surely is a better solution than continuing with this.

This also follwoed the revelation from the member for Cairns that the current funding arrangements for Cairns Base Hospital are inequitable and have been a problem for 20years. WTF?? Then why didn't you do something? The story below shows the results.

you can read the Courier mail story at -

And the press release I put out yesterday-

Media release for Friday 16th September 2011
Mental health service cuts impact on regional Australia
The Australian Party Candidate for Cairns Darren Hunt has called on the government to re-instate the program that provided mental health services to regional and rural Australia.
Mr Hunt said “The decision to cut the maximum visits allowed under the previous scheme since 2006 because of the new ‘Better access to mental health care’ is going to have severe impacts for areas like Cairns and surrounding rural and regional areas.”
“These decisions are made by bureaucrats in major cities who have access to a wide variety of health services that are not available to people in the bush. Where do those people go under this scheme?”
“People won’t drive 4hours off their farm, to catch a 2 hour plane ride for a one hour session in the city with a psychiatrist. There has to be flexibility and local services to meet the unique needs of Far North Queensland.”
“Too many Queenslanders are lost to suicide from mental health issues that could be addressed and I encourage everyone to make their voice heard with their local representatives or join the better access petition at http://betteraccess.net/index.php/petition-link.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

There is currently moves to convince the government to re-instate the program that previously provided mental health assistance. These types of programs are vital in regional and rural Australia to provide services to people that often don't have access to other options.

The cost of not doing anything compared to re-instating this program does not even come close.

MILK PRICING COSTING FNQ JOBS AND INDUSTRY

The farcical comments today from Coles marketing manager/spin doctor shows they just don't get it and think we are a bunch of morons. This is a ploy to corner the market like they did with fuel. Choke the farmers out and then charge what you like when you have a monopoly on milk. The other arm to this strategy is that it chokes small corner stores, local shops etc that rely on foot traffic associated with buying milk. Again, choke out the independents and then jack up prices.
At least 20 farmers have folded from the Tablelands sincen this practice commenced. If Coles/Wollies were fair dinkum about 'responding to customers' and not just trying to choke the diary industry to manipulate prices, why won't they drop the price of branded milk like Dairy Farmers that uses FNQ produced milk? With former contracts to provide milk for the no name brands not renewed means if there is no demand for branded milk, because no name is a $1/llitre, the FNQ dairy industry will grind to a halt.
If these supermarkets are telling the truth, then drop the price of Dairy Farmers/Mungali/any other brand using FNQ milk to $1/litre.
here is my media release-

The Katter’s Australian Party Cairns candidate Darren Hunt says the recent actions by major supermarkets on milk pricing is costing Far North Queensland jobs and placing our dairy industry in danger of closure.

Mr Hunt said “The claims by Coles today that they are merely responding to consumers call for cheaper prices is rubbish. If that is true I call on Coles and Woolworths to drop the branded milk using Queensland produced milk to $1 per litre, instead of just the unbranded Victorian produced milk, and let consumers decide.”

“These actions are costing FNQ jobs. Farmers are walking away with about 20 lost to FNQ since this pricing scheme started. The argument it doesn’t change the farm gate price is correct, but the issue is if there is no demand for the branded milk due to the unfair pricing of Victorian produced no-name brands then there won’t be anything paid at the farm gate and our industry will fold.”

“There has been an overall decrease in milk consumption despite the reduced supermarket costs. The actions by these supermarkets are exactly what they did with fuel prices. It is their aim to squeeze the local independents out so they can move in and have a monopoly on milk. Just like fuel, once the independents are gone, milk prices will go through the roof.”

“If Coles stands by it’s comments it is only about providing for consumers, then let’s see them drop the Queensland produced milk price or we will know they are simply talking dairy cow manure.”

PAYROLL TAX REFORM NEEDED

As our economy struggles to cope with uncertainty we really need to diversify our economy. Small and medium businesses play an important role in this process and that is why we are pushing for payroll tax reform. After the announcement by Suncorp that they are considering moving jobs off shore it is more important than ever to secure our economic future. here is the press release-

The Katter’s Australian Party Cairns candidate Darren Hunt says the recent announcement that Suncorp was considering sending jobs off shore highlights the need for urgent payroll tax reform.

Mr Hunt said “Here we go again. Another day, another Queensland business being forced to look at sending jobs overseas. The government has claimed at the last election they were all about jobs, jobs, jobs. We’ve seen how well that worked out. Not only can’t they create the new ones they promised, but we are losing the ones we already have due to bureaucracy and a crippling tax regime.”

Mr Hunts’ calls come after Suncorp indicated they may be sending jobs off shore with the potential to lose thousands of finance sector jobs.
“The Australian Party has put forward a proposal for payroll tax reform that would help strengthen our economy. There is clearly something wrong that we are losing so many jobs and this must change if we want any jobs to remain in Queensland.”
“This government cannot continue to rely on job figures from the mining sector to cover up the obliteration of jobs in other sectors of our economy. If we do not have a diversified economy when the mining boom eases we will be left swinging in the breeze with no chance to come back. It is time Queensland was given a competitive edge and payroll tax reform will aid that.”

CRIME SPREE SHOWS NEED FOR HELICOPTERS

After the recent crime spree in Cairns and the chase down south it is further proof of the need for a strategic helicopter fleet for use by the Qld Police Service. here is the media release put out by me-

The Australian Party spokesperson for police, corrections and emergency services Darren Hunt has called for a strategic helicopter fleet for Queensland Police after a spate of dangerous incidents.

Mr Hunt said “The recent events in Cairns and the Gold Coast highlights the need for a strategic helicopter fleet for police instead of having to rely on news crews. This government has dragged it’s feet for too long on this issue. Innocent people had their lives put in danger at Cairns and the Gold Coast in the past two days and it is time for this to end.”

“We have a pursuit policy so restrictive police are too scared to do their job and supervisors don’t even ask details anymore, they just automatically terminate pursuits as displayed last night.

“The Australian Party has been calling for a fleet of strategically based helicopters to service the state. Of course it makes sense to have the first one based in South East Queensland. But there should also be one based in Cairns to service the Far North and if viable a third based in Central Queensland. Police currently rely on other agencies, such as Emergency Management Queensland, which has seen their fleet grounded over recent weeks, limiting police options.”

“Last year the Queensland Police Service did not spend a significant amount of their budget, which would easily cover the costs associated. Instead of focusing on buying fixed wing aircraft to ferry politicians around pork barreling marginal electorates, this government should be focusing on giving police the resources they need to do their job and that starts with a strategic helicopter fleet.”

MORE ASSAULTS ON POLICE

Another vicious attack on a police officer in Bundaberg. The laws are soft and need to change.
here is the copy of the media release put out by me-

The Katter’s Australian Party Cairns candidate Darren Hunt says the governments’ soft on crime approach is contributing to assaults on emergency services staff.

Mr Hunt said “Here we go again. Another day, another serious assault on a Queensland police officer. This is unacceptable and it is the governments soft on crime approach that is contributing to these attacks. The LNP don’t have the guts to follow through on their previous position of mandatory sentencing for serious assaults on police anymore. This leaves the Australian Party as the only one prepared to stand up for our emergency service staff.”

Mr Hunts calls come after a Bundaberg police officer was seriously injured when kicked in the head whilst tending to someone lying on the ground.
“Queensland Police have become punching bags for local thugs with a busted jaw and facial injuries suffered by one officer doing their job on the weekend. It is time this government grew a spine and introduced legislation that will provide a deterrent to assaults on Queensland emergency service personnel.”
“The Australian Party extends our best wishes to the officer assaulted trying to keep Queensland safe and hopes they have a speedy recovery during what is an extremely traumatic time.

ALP/LNP BICKERING OVER THE BIG ISSUES, AS THEY SEE IT

What an utter disgrace we have seen in Queensland Parliament today. the major parties are more interested in arguing like little children than discussing the real issues and this is why time should be up for both of them.

Honestly how much more petty bickering is going to go on over whether or not Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane is a "world class stadium" or not. With all the issues impacting on Queensland at the moment is this really the most important topic? Does this issue relally rate this many questions and discussion in parliament.
What about education? What about our health system? What about infrastructure? What about police/fire/ambulance staff issues? What about upgrading the Bruce Hwy?

Oh no here we go now Paul Hoolihan is going to chip in, oh here we go now it's Mike Horans turn. No wonder our state is struggling if the major parties think this is what is important to spend so much time in Queensland parliament on.

Way to focus on the big issues impacting on Queensland, you bunch of clowns.

CAIRNS AND FNQ FORGOTTEN IN INFRASTRUCTURE DEBATE

The recent debate about Campbell Newman and his maybe, maybe not support or funding for the $8billion Brisbane rail bridge shows neither party gives a stuff about FNQ and Cairns. This debate came a few days after  the LNP leader in Townsville failed to commit to supporting the required upgrades to the Bruce Hwy. The ALP has continued to put the issue on the back burner using smoke and mirrors and hiding it in the back pages of 50 year plans.
This road floods every year. We get cut off year, after year, after year. We don't need this fixed in 50 years, we need it fixed now. Here's a tip to Campbell and Anna. Queensland does not end at Noosa.

The people of Cairns need to know that the proposed rail bridge for Brisbane they are arguing over will cost $8billion. Coincidentally, that is how much it was estimated it would cost to complete the entire roadworks required on the Bruce Highway all the way to Cairns.
With an election looming do you think the govt and LNP will commit to funding the needed works to the Bruce Hwy or porkbarell their SEQ electorates?

FARM FUNDING RESEARCH AXED

Another example of the short sightedness of the govt. with their decision to stop funding farming research. At a time when we need to be innovative to be competitive in the international market it is a strange time to axe this research. The anti-competitive tariffs and govt supports provided to some overseas farmers puts us at a disadvantage.Monitoring/accountability and workplace health and safety prcatices that increase our costs are not present in some other countries. The wages paid to Australian workers compared to other workers impacts on our ability to compete.
With the impacts that the governments new carbon tax will have on farming, this is not the time to be pulling research that helps keep us competitive. We need a diversified economy and we can not neglect our rural and primary production industry.

Here's the link-

PAYROLL DEBACLE CONTINUES

and so it goes on..... The health payroll system has STILL not been fixed. This lemon that cost $70million to buy and is now costing another $250million to fix shows how hopeless this government is and why it needs to go.
Further evidence has emerged the government was made aware of the concerns by IT professionals yet this stupid know all, know nothing government ignored the warning and bluinder on through this $300million fiasco. Still not one minister has been held accountable, including the Premier. When we think that we are spending about $250million on the current Cairns Base Hospital re-development stage it just goes to show how much better this money could have been spent.
Such an appaling waste of tax payer monies should have one outcome only for the Government responsible.

here is the Courier mail link of the advice provided-

EXCITING TIMES AHEAD

The recent polls conducted by the Courier mail shows what everyone else has been saying. The ALP and LNP are two heads of the same beast and both are more concerned with their own political future than coming up with effective long term policy for the benefit of Queenslanders. It is time for a new force in Queensland politics.

The government continues to learch from one disaster to another. They sold assets that made a profit and are looking for the next piece of silverware to sell off to get them out of strife because the last asset sale didn't. Electricty is next and anyone who doesn't think is going to happen under the ALP believes in the tooth fairy.

The LNP are no better. They sided with the government opposing the moratorium on CSG fracking. Campbell Newmans just vote 1 campaign shows that he would rather let Labor get back in if it means one of his stooges doesn't win the seat. This stupidity begs the question what if one of you candidates is an absolute stinker that does not have community support and that community is looking to vote for someone other than Labor? Would you really prefer that preferences didn't go to someone other than Labor so they don't get back in?Just proves Campbell and the LNP are only in it for what they can get.

People want change and that is why they are turning to the Katter Australian Party. Here's the courier mail link-

DON'T LIKE RESULT, ATTACK THE REFEREE-ALP PLAYBOOK

Appears the Prime Minister has decided to set a fine example as the supposed leader of our country that if you don't like the outcome of a decision instead of looking at your own shortcomings, or downright pigheaded stubborness and stupidity, you blame the umpire and attack them in the public arena.
The fact is the whole assylum seeker issue has been handled pathetically with Labor lurching from one stupid decision to another.
Pathetic.
