The Australian Party Candidate for Cairns Darren Hunt has called for the Premier to explain why her government continues to overlook Cairns.
Mr Hunt said “The Premiers announcement that she wants the navy submarines to be based in Brisbane, when Cairns is the only naval base on the east coast, shows she is desperate to pork barrel Brisbane electorates at the expense of Cairns. It is further proof that under this government Regional and Rural Queensland will never get a fair go.”
“The people of Cairns still remember it was her government that cruelled NQEA when they had the potential to create jobs and growth for Cairns. This government provided a subsidy to Brisbane airport instead of Cairns to attract direct flights from China when we had the highest unemployment rates and a downturn in tourism.”
“At a time when Cairns has some of the highest unemployment rates in the country, opportunities for jobs in Cairns should be this governments priority. Unfortunately, as usual with this government, we are out of sight out of mind and the Premier chose to pork barrel Brisbane electorates and then maybe throw Cairns the scraps that fall off the table.”
“The Australian Party will work to help diversify the Cairns economy and attract employment opportunities instead of concentrating only on Brisbane.”
