The Queensland Party spokesperson for Police, Corrections and Emergency Services Darren Hunt has welcomed the governments back flip on GPS tagging for sex offenders.
Mr Hunt said “At last the government has seen sense and committed to implementing the sex offender GPS tagging that is so desperately needed. The Courier Mail needs to be congratulated for maintaining the pressure in this campaign as the government clearly was not listening to the needs of the community.”
"This decision is a victory for common sense and shows why there is a need for change in the political landscape in Queensland. The government refused to listen to the community and implement GPS tagging, coming up with a plethora of weak excuses. We made our position very clear and it is on then public record for all to see. What is also clear to see is the total lack of comment from the opposition spokesperson.”
Mr Hunt stated “The Queensland Party is the only party prepared to put forward solutions. The people of Queensland have had enough. If these offenders are going to be released into the community then we need to have the procedures in place to allow the greatest prospect of rehabilitation whilst still maintaining the protection Queenslanders deserve. These simple measures will go a long way to achieving that.”
“What we need to ensure is that this is not just smoke and mirrors to deflect bad press for the government. The government needs to not only commit to funding the devices but also the staff, resources and budget to ensure proper monitoring occurs or the whole issue is pointless. The GPS devices are only as useful as the monitoring capabilities and process.”Mr Hunt said
